Spring Flowers

One of the first things I did yesterday morning after being cooped up all day on Friday was to buy three bunches of yellow tulips. I wanted to brighten the living room with spring color.

The small chair in the background was recently reupholstered in taupe mohair and I think it turned out quite nicely.  The chair had been my grandmother's, was originally covered in a nubby rose fabric, and later, a red ticking stripe fabric (which never really suited the chair).  I'd reupholstered it myself in the ticking stripe more than 12 years ago, when I took an upholstery class.  I'd had visions of turning all sorts of furniture in new pieces by upholstering them myself.  Although the class was a good experience, I never ended up reupholstering anything myself after this chair and another wingback that's in storage. It was a long class that went on for weeks and it seemed as though it would take less time to prepare oneself for childbirth than it would to recover a chair.  Needless to say, I took the chair to a professional for its mohair cover.

Thank you for your kind comments on my last post.  I hope you have a good week ahead.  I've been working on a project that doesn't involve furniture or fabric, but has taken a lot of time and experimentation.  Hopefully, if all goes well, I'll be able to share it soon.

  1. Nothing like yellow tulips (or daffodils) to cheer up the home. Beautiful photo, Deborah! The taupe mohair is lovely on your grandmother's chair - simple yet sophisticated!

  4. There is nothing nicer to cheer you up than a bunch of flowers. We are heading into our winter here in New Zealand and a bunch of flowers I think is what I need to brighten up my living room as we have had 3 days of constant rain after a long hot and dry summer and I am already feeling low and its not quite mid Autumn.

I love your mohair chair, I am also working on some upcycling of my mothers things i inherited last year. Two rooms in my house are full of her lovely things and I am at the stage of having to decide what to keep and what goes. It's a hard decision to make but one I know I have to do as I need to move on and start painting again which is what I promised her. My art studio at the moment is also full of mums things.

Thank you for sharing these lovely tulips. Your house looks gorgeous.

  6. You know what, you deserve a star on the "Give It Up Walk Of Fame". There is such relief to write a check rather than struggle with tasks that end up not being what you want or that fall short of the goal. When I can give it up I feel like I've won the lottery.

  8. I am running out today to pick up some yellow tulips. They are on sale at the local Metro store, today only. Thank you for the idea. I have a similar chair from my mother which was originally covered with needlepoint... I was thinking of a zebra material. Not! When I saw your lovely mohair chair I knew this would fit in with my present style much better. I must have been having a really bad senior moment .....Zebra? Really? ....Love your posts.

  9. Your home looks so classic and charming always. I love the chair and had a great laugh at your upholstery comment. Like you, I've taken similar classes, like picture framing, and then just go to the professionals as I learned mostly what a pain in the ass it is to do and have all the gear. haha.

Flowers make my day. xo Terri
