In a pinch, when fresh flowers aren't available, I like the look of rustic wooden spoons in a vase for a casual winter supper. Add a few votive candles and you're done. It's one less thing to do and no worry about keeping the flowers fresh.</div>

<br />
I took a long absence from blogging this summer, although I didn't really plan to. Sometimes it was hard to find inspiration about blogging when we were working on the house and things were messy. I spent most of the spring and summer working on our bedroom. It needed every thing from paint to carpet, but it was a fun project--choosing fabric and finding just the right touches to brighten the room. I can't wait to start work on the second bedroom! Here are the before and after photos of our bedroom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOIubaZTAeTprmZWLoH4gtHdG8G3UK1irficM9jAFE7ppej93Ud9GnAtbf1cipVyWMtDEwdK1VStM65g_6q6k8fpvmJfLCp1S0giOIvTO2zA9NgxfciM7j513CL-ZB5k3wQLEkTM_2gbk/s1600/BR22.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOIubaZTAeTprmZWLoH4gtHdG8G3UK1irficM9jAFE7ppej93Ud9GnAtbf1cipVyWMtDEwdK1VStM65g_6q6k8fpvmJfLCp1S0giOIvTO2zA9NgxfciM7j513CL-ZB5k3wQLEkTM_2gbk/s640/BR22.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
The house was built in 1875 and none of the original features remain, except for the pine floor. They don't look bad here, but they were old, worn and had wide gaps between the boards, which were a magnet for dust. To create a warmer and brighter look, I had the floor covered with wool wall-to-wall carpeting. You can see my bureau on the left, which isn't may favorite piece of furniture, but it provides plenty of storage in this house with few closets. I decided to paint it white to blend with the walls since it originally had a dark stain finish.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here's the room with carpeting. It's not as dark as it looks here. It's actually a blend of cream and pale aqua fibers. The aqua is very subtle and soft. The ceiling is painted pale blue and it nicely complements the carpet. Jon liked the carpet too, which surprised me.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is a photo of the West side of the room. It's been difficult to get good photos of this room for some reason. Ever since the iOS8 iphone software update, it seems like the quality of iphone photos isn't what it used to be. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
Here's the after shot. The colors are a bit washed-out in the photo, so the drapery fabric looks muted. The fabric is a blend of ivory, soft aqua, taupe and a touch of butter. That's Jon's cherry wood dresser in the photo. I'm not a fan of dark wood, but he loves his furniture and it's beautifully made, so there it is. I chose the bronze finish on the drapery rods to complement with the wood dresser. </div>

This is the before photo of the East side of the room. Notice the lovely patch in the wood floor. I have no idea why there would have been a gaping hole in the floor at one time.<br />

Much better, don't you think? I bought the antique botanical on eBay years ago for about $20 and finally had it framed. I chose a custom white gold-leaf frame with blue highlights in a floral and vine motif. It's so nice to have found just the right spot for this print.</div>

We bought a new bed too as this one was too small for us. This photo was taken after we painted the walls and trim. I'm so glad the pine floor is gone! Some people will think I'm crazy for covering original pine floors with carpet, but trust me. The floor looks much better in the photos than it did in person.</div>

This photo is too light, but at least it shows the finished room. I had a headboard made in a wheat-colored fabric with a matching bed skirt. The alabaster lamps are from Brimfield--purchased about 15 years ago. I thought about selling them, but kept them and bought new silk pleated shades for them. The lamps had been in the living room and they look much better here. </div>

Finally, here's a photo that shows the true color of the drapes and trim. I didn't originally plan to use trim, but once I saw it with the drapes, I was sold. It really dresses up the room. The butter-colored fabric on the right was used to make a Roman shade for the hall window. I had the same trim attached to the bottom of the Roman shade.</div>

<br />
So that's our new bedroom. I'm pleased with how it turned out. I made some changes in the living room too and will post about it soon. Thanks for following along!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope you are having a terrific Fall. I have been enjoying myself with projects around the house, including the redo of the bedroom and will be posting before and after photos soon. In addition to work and house projects, I've been experimenting with making scented candles--it's a hobby that's been all consuming. It's been a challenge experimenting with scents, wicks, and wax, but I'm really having fun with it (mostly through trial and error).</div>

More to follow!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Nancy Fishelson is an architectural designer whose homes have been featured in Country Living, Connecticut Cottages & Gardens and Architectural Digest. I did a post about Nancy's former <strong><a href="http://boxwoodterrace.blogspot.com/2013/08/nancy-fishelsons-former-home.html"><span style="color: #a64d79;">Connecticut home last year</span></a></strong> and recently spoke with Nancy about what's she currently working on and how she got her start in design. If you're familiar with Nancy, you know that she has a talent for transforming houses into beautiful homes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Although I'd read about Nancy's work, I couldn't find much information about her when I wrote the post last year. Nancy told me that she had wanted to be a set designer, but became a production assistant and later an executive producer at an advertising agency. She was most recently the executive producer of a film production company in Los Angeles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Nancy got her start in design when she and two business partners bought and renovated a California property. She eventually moved to the east coast, buying and renovating a large house in Connecticut, which she's since sold. Nancy has worked on homes in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts (including Nantucket) and Maine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Before speaking with Nancy, I thought she only renovated her own homes, but I learned that she also designs for clients. Her projects range from full-scale renovations (including major structural corrections) to decorating consultations. I was most familiar with Nancy's business of buying and selling antiques from the Country Living and Connecticut Homes & Gardens articles. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Nancy shared with me these photos of her recent projects and even shared a few tips with me too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Following are photos of a project Nancy did for a client in California. As always, I admire Nancy's us of natural colors and the way she uses texture, contrast and light to make simple spaces come alive.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Nancy is known for her use of pale, white color-schemes and antiques, but she also uses modern appliances and has found more than a few bargains for her projects. Here are a few tips from Nancy:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. Finding the right antiques and furnishings requires diligence and patience. You must be willing to put in the time to visit antique shops and flea markets, often the same ones and frequently, to become familiar with the owner's merchandise and to check for new pieces.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. Nancy often buys antiques at flea markets. She does not often attend auctions as the bidding can escalate in the blink of an eye. It's better to avoid getting swept up in the action and risk over bidding and having buyer's remorse later.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. Nancy is not afraid to hunt for a bargain. Although the cabinets in her Killingworth, Connecticut home (below) were custom designed and built, Nancy purchased the kitchen cabinets for her Woodbury, Connecticut home (not shown) on ebay and had them installed by her carpenter. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

4. Nancy has saved on high-end appliances by buying a La Cornue stove that was a discounted floor model and even bought a Sub Zero refrigerator on Craig's List. I've heard of people finding good deals on Craig's List, but that was an eye-opener.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
5. I asked Nancy what paint colors she uses in her projects and not surprisingly, she has custom-mixed formulas that she's used repeatedly. However, she also likes Benjamin Moore and Pratt & Lambert paints.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
* She often uses Benjamin Moore's "Dove White"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
* Nancy likes the warm gray of Benjamin Moore's "Thunder" for floors</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
* The best gray color Nancy said she's used is Pratt & Lambert's "Tucker Pale Gray", but it's been discontinued. She has had the shade custom-matched, however, in Benjamin Moore paint.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We were in New York two weeks ago to see "Macbeth" starring Kenneth Branagh at the Park Avenue Armory. I am not a Shakespeare buff (Jon is) and it was the first time I'd seen the play, but I thought it was fantastic. Did you see it? I'd be curious to know your thoughts about it.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On Sunday, we visited The Frick Collection, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and afterward walked around Central Park. This scene at the pond where people navigate remote-controlled sailboats was, I thought, reminiscent of a scene that Monet might have painted.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ideas for a summer wedding</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The summer solstice arrived this weekend, which means more time outdoors in warm breezes surrounded by light, airy colors and long twilight afternoons. For some reason, being a newly wed has drawn me to photos of wedding themes more than ever before. There isn't a pretty dress, flower arrangement or cake swathed in white butter cream that gets by me these days. I'm thinking of making a petite wedding cake just to celebrate six months of marriage, which is really just an excuse to make (and eat) a cake. After all, "a party without a cake is just a meeting," according to Julia Child. I'm not sure if she really said that, but I like to think so. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One pretty image leads to the next and suddenly I'm imagining a small wedding reception in a cool leafy space by a turquoise pool. Bridesmaids in silk satin and tulle float from table to table and a small group of guests nibble cheese straws and sip cold minted pea soup. The main course includes poached salmon with cucumber sauce, lightly sauteed spring vegetables and jasmine rice. Dessert includes coconut lime sorbet and wedding cake. For a wedding favor, guests would receive small white boxes of chocolate nonpareils, tied with a pale blue ribbon.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The thoughts alone are enough to transport me from Monday morning to Saturday afternoon. Now I just need to figure out what to do on Tuesday.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I have a habit of starting a post by commenting about the weather. Am I the only one who just noticed that? Gee, how boring can I be? Waiting in line to buy stamps at the post office is more interesting than writing about the weather. I'm cutting myself some slack though because this is New England, gosh darn-it, and weather is something we're known for here so why not talk about it occasionally or at least every two months?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One day it's twenty-five degrees but "feels like two degrees" (according to weather.com) at 7:30 am and you're cursing the unrelenting wind as you try not to slip on icy sidewalks while hustling to the subway on your way to work in your sleeping-bag length hooded down coat that you've been wearing everyday for what seems like six months and a few days later (or so it seems), you're struggling to lift the air conditioner into the window, trying to remember where you stored your bathing suit (sunscreen/shorts/sandals/sunglasses) and that hair that you just spent twenty minutes blow drying reasonably straight and then flat-ironing for fifteen minutes more and then touching up again with the blow dryer for another five minutes in a never ending battle against humidity is a cloud of fuzz the minute you step outside.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But as I said to someone in the elevator at work this morning, I'm not complaining. I love the change of seasons.</div>

Things have been busy here between our honeymoon in Bermuda, a trip to Seattle to visit friends and work on the house. It's been a fun spring (except for the New England weather) and we've gotten a lot accomplished at the house. We've been painting and I've been redoing the bedroom and choosing new furniture and fabrics for the living room--more about that in future posts.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
Although our travels started in Bermuda, I couldn't help but lead with this photo I took of a Camellia in bloom at the Japanese Tea Garden at the Washington Park Arboretum. More about that below.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Jon and I honeymooned in Bermuda in early April and it was everything we imagined it would be. We stayed at a tennis club on the island and I took this photo from our table on the terrace where we had lunch everyday. It's paradise, if you ask me. Jon and I want to visit Bermuda once a year, if possible. It's only a one and one-half hour flight from Boston, which makes it an ideal get-away.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
In mid-April we flew to Seattle, Washington to visit friends. During our stay, our friends took us to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Tulips of all colors are grown in these vast fields and then harvested and shipped to stores throughout the country. The Cascade Mountains are in the background.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The festival features an extensive garden planted with thousands of tulips in many varieties and colors. Wherever I looked there was a blanket of color. This was a welcome sight after a long gray winter in Boston.</div>

I'd posted a few weeks ago about the small room that we were making into a home office to accommodate Jon's furniture and here are the results. We are very pleased with how it turned out. It's a small room (only about 11' by 8') and although I was worried that it would feel like a closet, all the furniture fits in nicely and it's a warm, cozy retreat. My hope was to give the room a cozy English library look.</div>

I was concerned that the paint color would be too dark, but the blue-green hue complements the cherry furniture, which was my intent. I don't normally use such dark paint colors, but white walls would have contrasted strongly with the furniture and done nothing to highlight the color of the wood. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Everything in the room is from Jon's former home, including the Simon Pearce lamp. The green color of the lamp works well here too. I chose an oatmeal colored rug, which works well with the furniture and paint color. Special thanks to designer Frank Hodge for the carpet connection (thank you, Frank!).</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The other thing I decided to do was to paint the trim the same color as the walls (in a Satin finish). Since the room is so small, I didn't think that highlighting the trim by painting it white would be a good move. I spent considerable time mulling over the ceiling color and since the ceiling slopes down and is only about six feet high at the back of the room, I toyed with the idea of painting it the same color as the walls. In the end, I went with ceiling-white paint because with only one window and a low ceiling, the room might have felt like a cave if the ceiling color was too dark.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The room is awaiting a custom Roman shade in a fabric that matches the wall color to continue with the idea of a cozy English library. I'm also looking for a slim upholstered chair for this corner of the room. We also need the carpenter to come back (please!) and rehang the door. Other than that, we're done and now turning our attention to other rooms in the house. More to follow, soon and thanks for following along.</div>

Please raise your hand (or shovel) if you are ready for spring. Although it will snow again tomorrow, I'm telling myself not to lose heart. March is not far off and temperatures will be in the 40s next week. If you're not living in a wintry climate, it may seem strange or even pathetic to note 40 degree temperatures, but if you've heard the words "winter weather alert" more than four times this season, you may be looking forward to the warm-up too.<br />

If you're a fan of Ina Garten's, you probably saw the Barefoot Contessa episodes that were filmed in Napa Valley, California, where Ina and her husband Jeffrey were apparently vacationing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi__PiWkq1SpDnCSjQLPMdNpxIkBVpU2tp6i4aw1L9JgK8knFjot11ftEDycja8AcBLOvJuTKW2Fx86nlpcgaABIDkGmUzsbUmnVBj0nyUW1SKrbMaxBp5j2BqQARH6SOXzHTkNx1xyM3Y/s1600/Cal15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi__PiWkq1SpDnCSjQLPMdNpxIkBVpU2tp6i4aw1L9JgK8knFjot11ftEDycja8AcBLOvJuTKW2Fx86nlpcgaABIDkGmUzsbUmnVBj0nyUW1SKrbMaxBp5j2BqQARH6SOXzHTkNx1xyM3Y/s1600/Cal15.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I was taken not only with Ina's recipes in this series, but also with the kitchen where the episodes were filmed. </div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsmbB2KGd2EnWK08i2XEViNM3oIFr1xzIwmjtCMN1zC4IxNTOGjbKFyLYUfcwr3KcWEEDZ5EZkgQz4dwd0UyiezkF6yl4w-aE7gluFBL3TgneqkShqnv4Ljq1MUdMbuhL8ZJI0xSLJkUY/s1600/Cal1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsmbB2KGd2EnWK08i2XEViNM3oIFr1xzIwmjtCMN1zC4IxNTOGjbKFyLYUfcwr3KcWEEDZ5EZkgQz4dwd0UyiezkF6yl4w-aE7gluFBL3TgneqkShqnv4Ljq1MUdMbuhL8ZJI0xSLJkUY/s1600/Cal1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
By the way, the California sunshine looks so inviting that I could have pressed my face against my monitor to soak up some warmth, but managed to restrain myself. I'm not complaining, but it's January in Boston and with the Polar Vortex and all that, I'm starved for sunshine right now. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYJ8VgsLdzjSgMNN55ZmUvBRiFTjm8AB7jqsMSsQzt38Y3RfDW2TRs6u6DLiAihksnQ02JpKOvMY-0rJsPnBLgUgWC6GTj5EF25mV5CPbRTdiyWMnYCORpT8MPwayIMqVf-Du4d2mkaj0/s1600/Cal3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYJ8VgsLdzjSgMNN55ZmUvBRiFTjm8AB7jqsMSsQzt38Y3RfDW2TRs6u6DLiAihksnQ02JpKOvMY-0rJsPnBLgUgWC6GTj5EF25mV5CPbRTdiyWMnYCORpT8MPwayIMqVf-Du4d2mkaj0/s1600/Cal3.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyway, a little Internet research yielded the house in Napa Valley where the Barefoot Contessa episodes were filmed. I've convinced myself that this is my dream house. Doesn't this look like a fantastic place to have al fresco breakfast, lunch, and dinner? The entrance to the kitchen is under the pergola.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQzG_0O4UM4G0l_7rHytynCOmdJHdNb2mA08iWI7FFwl431z8D3k7OtL_r4h5wborluhVuy0SsOYisEnK_xIAU7wk_BzkI13R1AxK5I-1CAsKj3BEpg6k46rX_Szrv1-rFLLUFYs56dak/s1600/Cal4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQzG_0O4UM4G0l_7rHytynCOmdJHdNb2mA08iWI7FFwl431z8D3k7OtL_r4h5wborluhVuy0SsOYisEnK_xIAU7wk_BzkI13R1AxK5I-1CAsKj3BEpg6k46rX_Szrv1-rFLLUFYs56dak/s1600/Cal4.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This looks like a lovely space to relax with a book and take a nap after lunch. The website shows the interior of this outbuilding, which is empty, so I haven't included the photo.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's the table where Ina and Jeffrey ate lunch and dinner. Look at that grill in the background. I can imagine grilling porterhouse steaks for dinner. Tyler Florence makes an appearance in one of the episodes and prepares steak for Ina at one of his restaurants.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div align="center">
The dining area has plenty of built-in cabinets for storage. This wasn't shown in the episodes, but it's so pretty, I had to include it.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ah, the kitchen at last. I do love this. The dark (granite?) counter tops are similar to those in Ina's East Hampton barn. One of my favorite features is the set of pocket doors that leads directly to the patio. It's perfect for entertaining, isn't it?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The gas cook top is housed in a butcher block island. And the sunshine....nothing like bringing the outdoors in. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is my favorite view and one that I remember clearly from the episodes, although the rustic island is not visible on the show. Do you think that's a Sub Zero refrigerator? It appears to have a chalkboard finish (and that was my guess from watching the show), but could that be true? Any ideas? Whatever it is, the refrigerator is on my wish list.<br />
<br />
The photos of the house are from the website of <a href="http://www.mintlocations.com/"><span style="color: black;"><strong>Mint Locations</strong></span></a><strong>, </strong><span style="color: black;">which represents exceptional properties in Northern California for film and photo shoots. They have wonderful homes to view if you have some free time and want to see more of this home.</span><br />

Despite the 14 inches of snow we received on Friday, we have started the home office renovation and the contractor has been hanging the drywall. Here are a few photos of the room before the drywall was installed and during the installation. The photos aren't very exciting, but I'm sure you know what it's like when you're having work done to your home--every bit of progress is indeed exciting. </div>

The drywall should be finished today, which leaves the taping of the joints and plastering next weekend. I've already chosen the paint color, which will be a deep blue-green. The room is very small (ok, tiny!), but I am hoping the dark paint color will be good choice and it should work well with the cherry furniture. </div>

The floors are pine, but I'm a bit tired of the rustic look (and orange-ish color), so we'll have wall-to-wall carpeting installed. I haven't even begun to look at carpet samples yet so need to do this, pronto. The carpeting needs to be installed before the desk and bookcases are delivered. </div>

The former owners used this room as the children's bedroom. When I bought the house, I had to take some space from this room to have a walk-in closet built in the master bedroom. The original closet was unbelievably tiny, as is the case with these old houses. The window is being covered with drywall and the exterior has been shingled to match the house. </div>

I'm usually reserved and don't share much about myself here, but I wanted to share the happy news that Jon and I are getting married. This is the happiest time in my life and I feel so fortunate to be marrying such a wonderful man. I never thought during many years (actually many, many, many years) of being single that I would meet a man that is as good, kind and thoughtful as Jon is. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We've been dating for six years, became engaged over Thanksgiving and have decided to marry this New Year's Eve. The response from everyone has been "<em>this </em>New Year's Eve?", but we are eager and excited to start our life together and what better way to end the year and start the new one than with a wedding. We are not having a wedding per se, but instead a small private ceremony. As much as I enjoy weddings, the thought of planning one right now is daunting. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOvvmFi_yH_R8b6CWnCcI0htbqfnKopu_d07R8-9Yl0TvmwCxi7F_6WP4hEK9BJmBGMG3Vr5bEGYfTMYmVBShWd5P_f5JzIXCEV9LyymjEwqaWRTj5jiIqtafyLC8BiENo1rUAxdwbljs/s1600/us2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOvvmFi_yH_R8b6CWnCcI0htbqfnKopu_d07R8-9Yl0TvmwCxi7F_6WP4hEK9BJmBGMG3Vr5bEGYfTMYmVBShWd5P_f5JzIXCEV9LyymjEwqaWRTj5jiIqtafyLC8BiENo1rUAxdwbljs/s640/us2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Jon is selling his condominium and we will live in my small house until we figure out our next move. This will mean blending his furniture with mine, choosing new furnishings together and making the most of the limited closet space in my house. We're converting an unused room into a home office and I already have a dramatic paint color in mind for the room. We have a few other home improvements we're planning and it will be fun to share these on the blog. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We've both been cleaning out clutter from our homes to get ready for the move so although the Christmas tree is decorated, I've not done much holiday decorating. I've been inspired by great ideas from other blogs, however, so hopefully I'll find time to do more Christmas decorating. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wish you all the best for the holiday season. Thank you for reading my blog throughout the year-- I greatly appreciate the time you take from your busy life to read, follow along and leave such kind comments. It means so much to me.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

All the best to you and your families,</div>

Aren't these paper lanterns charming? I remember seeing them in Traditional Home magazine a few years ago and wondering where I could buy them. Unfortunately, I couldn't find them anywhere. I was thrilled this week to read about the lanterns at "<a href="http://www.architecturalwatercolors.com/noted"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Noted</span></a>", the blog by the artists of Architectural Watercolors (see blog roll) and the creator of the lantern images. Noted posted that the lanterns are being produced again through Libretto Group. Thank you, AW. You've made my day.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I searched Google and found the paper lanterns (pictured above) at <a href="http://stores.shopcarefulpeach.com/StoreFront.bok"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Careful Peach Boutique</span></a>. However, I ordered two of the "Mr. Jefferson's Folly" lamp (below) and can't for for them to arrive. I plan to buy a few battery operated tea lights to pop inside a lantern and let it glow, let it glow, let it glow (sorry, I couldn't resist).<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
I have been culling my collection of magazines and found an old issue of Country Home, which was my favorite magazine along with Cottage Living. It's a shame that both magazines are no longer published (along with a few other casualties of the 2008 economic downturn).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyway, this photo is not from the sole Country Home magazine in my collection, but I remember the feature well. The contrast between the toast colored furniture and cool blue-green walls (painted Restoration Hardware's Silver Sage--remember that paint color?) made quite an impression on me. The black accents work well too along with the shine from the mercury glass lamp. Why isn't someone reproducing lamps like this today? They are impossible to find.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have the itch to buy this paint and get busy, but the open floor plan of my house means that the entire downstairs would have to be painted this color, which probably wouldn't work well long-term. At least I can admire it from afar.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I've always wanted to do a post about Belgian decor, but it's been four years since I started the blog and Belgian style has become even more popular. As a result, there are those who highlight the style better than I ever could (like Greet Lefevere at <a href="http://belgianpearls.blogspot.com/"><span style="color: #7f6000;"><strong>Belgian Pearls</strong></span></a>). I only posted this room to show the beauty in simplicity, which in my opinion, is the heart of Belgian style. </div>

A search on google for something else entirely led me to the website of a hotel in Provence (worse things could happen, I suppose, when it comes to the Internet). I must have let out an audible sigh when I saw this room at the <a href="http://www.benvengudo.com/en/provence.html"><span style="color: #7f6000;">Benvengudo Hotel in Les Baux de Provence</span></a>. Don't you feel more relaxed just looking at the photo? The soft colors and gauzy drapes are so inviting. The wood paneled doors make the room--it could be bland without the additional color and texture.</div>

The flat screen television doesn't jive with my idea of a week in Provence, but it is a hotel room after all. Some U.S. vacationers, for example, may want to keep up with events at home, like what's happening with the debt ceiling. Not me. I'd pass on watching television although I can't go more than two hours without checking email on my iPhone so who am I to judge?</div>

This kitchen is from a villa at Stablewood Springs Resort in Texas. I believe, although am not sure, that the interior design is by <a href="http://www.ppiercedesigns.com/index.aspx"><span style="color: #783f04;"><strong>Pamela Pierce</strong></span></a> (please don't hold me to it). The link to the resort website is under the photo.</div>

Do you think white wicker chairs could work in a New England kitchen or do they seem better suited for a warm climate like Texas? I like them very much.</div>

There's been an interruption in my series of summer cottage rooms. During my usual Wednesday night web surfing, I found photos of designer Nancy Fishelson's former Connecticut home, which appears to have recently sold. The cozy but spare interiors of Fishelson's homes have always appealed to me and I thought you might like to see the house as well. Many of these rooms will be familiar to users of Pinterest and avid decor blog readers. All photos are from Sotheby's Realty.</div>
